The Beginning
The story of the chickens its actually kind of humorous. Here at Sweet BombDiggity Farms usually we like to rescue animals. It did not seem like there were any chickens in need of rescuing. Maybe this is because they are easier to care for and do not live a super long life. Or maybe we just could not find the right ones, hopefully it is the first one.
Well we decided that we needed some chickens on way or another. So we started building a chicken coop out of an old shed we had on the property that was not being used. The wall paper you see in the pictures below was a yard sale find but it turns out that it was designer, only the most bombdiggity things around here!
The Chicks
Once the coop was coming along and in full swing it was apparent that we needed some actual chickens. It just so happens that there are cute little babies at Tractor Supply that did need ‘saving’ or in need of a home at-least!
Baby chicks take a little while to grow into normal size chickens. They lived in the house inside brooder tanks with heat lamps and all their friends. They have to be raised like this until they are big enough to be outside and be safe. We did not want anyone getting cold or scared at night!
Chicken Math
Only thing that we did not count on, chicken math. Chicken math is just different, there really is not another way to explain it. They only let you buy them in sets of 4 or 5 and if there is a new breed of chicks then we have to have them! We want a flock that is diversified and lays all colors of eggs for us to eat and sell. After explaining chicken math, the important part to know is somehow we ended up with 35 ish. In one season, but we did get a custom sign and its true because they will most definitely be pampered!
Since we got chicks at all different visits to Tractor Supply, they were of all ages and have started to go outside a little at a time. They have a large run area that we can visit them in. We filled this with construction sand so that we can clean it daily and keep the smell down.
We are softies around here and these girls will all be egg layers and will not be meat chickens. Even when they stop laying eggs they will live out their retirement at Sweet BombDiggity Farms. The farm will have specific meat chickens later on but these girls will still be safe!
